Focus, Prayer on Holiest Day
Lake County News Sun - IL, Friday, October 10, 2008 |
| |
|
I finally drove to the Chabad Jewish Center, 5101 Washington St., Gurnee, where I tracked down Rabbi Sholom Tenenbaum, who had just finished leading the Yizkor Memorial Service. But Tenenbaum, who wore a prayer shawl and white sheath, could not speak with me, he briefly and politely explained. According to the center's Web site, for 26 hours during Yom Kippur, observant Jews "afflict" their souls, spending time in intense introspection. |

Secular and Orthodox Jews Meet at Preschool
The Forward - NY, Wednesday, October 08, 2008 |
| |
|
The school, Chai Tots, is run by Chabad Lubavitch, the ultra-Orthodox movement that caters to unaffiliated Jewish families... There are 154 such Chabad preschools nationwide, around 70 of which have opened in the past six years, according to Nachum Kaplan, national director of Chabad’s education arm... Chai Tots’ campus in Park Slope, its first and largest, is located in the basement of an apartment building across the street from Prospect Park, directly below the spacious apartment where Hecht and his wife, Sara, live with the younger members of their 12-child brood. |

Jewish Movement Undercuts Synagogues
Ottawa Citizen - Canada, Wednesday, October 08, 2008 |
| |
|
Synagogues in Ottawa will charge families hundreds, even thousands of dollars, for Yom Kippur services tonight -- except for a Jewish outreach group whose services are free. It's just another way the Chabad movement is getting under the skin of the Jewish establishment across North America. A U.S. expert says it's the fastest growing movement in modern Judaism, and in some communities, it is reordering daily life... Some businessmen believe the Chabadniks, as they are called, operate so frugally, they are just a better investment on the donor's dollar. |

Synagogue Reborn: Renovations Begin at Historic Orchard Street Shul
New Haven Register - CT, Sunday, October 05, 2008 |
| |
|
The younger Hecht, 23, an orthodox rabbi like his grandfather and his father, Rabbi Sheya Hecht, plans to infuse a modern twist by getting creative within the limits of his Judaism. That could mean outdoor gatherings over cocktails to learn the Torah or a kosher luncheon and lecture... “I think he’s going to do a wonderful job, but he has his job cut out for him,” said Sheya Hecht, who heads Southern Connecticut Hebrew Academy and Chabad of Orange. “It’s all the more special that it’s my father’s grandson doing it.” |

2 Holiest Days to Jews Little Noted by Gentiles
Deseret News - UT, Saturday, October 04, 2008 |
| |
|
During last year's observance, Orthodox Rabbi Benny Zippel of Chabad Lubavitch of Utah told the Deseret News that during Rosh Hashanah, Jews "cut a deal with God, so to speak. We make new year's resolutions upon ourselves to improve our ways, and in return, we ask God to bless us and our children with health and sustenance throughout the coming year. "It really isn't that much different than parents and children resolving their differences. We walk away from the services with a wonderful, positive felling — full of motivation and hope for the coming months." |

Faith Forum: What does Yom Kippur Mean to You?
Lawrence Journal World - KS, Saturday, October 04, 2008 |
| |
|
For all of us who are not perfect, Yom Kippur is our day. Rather than be depressed by failings, we celebrate them. Every sin, every slipup, every failed attempt at living up to our calling is another opportunity to grow and improve. Failing at our mission is itself a part of the mission. Yom Kippur is the day God thanks us for being human, and we thank God that we aren’t perfect. If we were, we’d have nothing to do... Rabbi Zalman Tiechtel can be reached at rabbi@JewishKU.com |

Torah Completion Ceremony Marks Milestone at Chabad of Nashoba Valley in Westford
Lowell Sun - MA, Saturday, October 04, 2008 |
| |
|
About 100 people gathered that Sunday on the lawn of Chabad House on Tadmuck Road, home to the Chabad of Nashoba Valley, for a rarely witnessed ceremony -- a Torah Completion and Dedication Ceremony. At the Chabad's first event, "We had three people. This past event drew 100 people," said Gurkow. "Three years ago, I had no idea a day could ever come when we'd celebrate with 100 people -- completing a Torah on the streets of Westford." |

Table for 80, Please
JVibe - NY, Friday, October 03, 2008 |
| |
|
Can you imagine hosting 80 college students at your house every Friday night? All the work it takes to prepare a Shabbat dinner? Growing up on a college campus, far from any Jewish school or friends? Well, welcome to my life. My parents opened up our Chabad House on the University of Delaware campus in 1992 with sanction by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, the last dynastic leader of Chabad. |
